Rediscovering the Simple Joys of Homesteading
Who Are We?
Welcome to The Oklahoma Homesteader, where we share our passion for backyard homesteading. Our journey began when Daniel, who is disabled, discovered his love for organic gardening and cooking from scratch. Melissa, his partner, also began making natural products, such as homemade laundry detergent and home remedies. Our goal is to inspire and educate others that no matter where they live, they can homestead and embrace a simpler way of life.
Together, we want to encourage everyone to get back to the basics and live a more self-sufficient lifestyle. Melissa also owns and manages ConsumerQueen.com, where she blogs full-time about deals, coupons, and more. We also share our love for travel on RoamingMyPlanet.com. Additionally, Melissa is an MSN contributor, where she shares her knowledge and insight.

10 Creative Ways to Use Mason Jars (That Aren’t Canning)
Mason jars are one of the most versatile tools in a creative home, especially for those who appreciate simple, practical living. Their clear glass and sturdy design make them perfect for far more than food storage. With a little imagination, they can become candle holders, vases for fresh-cut or dried flowers, or lanterns filled with fairy lights for a warm, welcoming glow. Swap out the contents with the seasons—pinecones and evergreens in winter, wildflowers in spring, shells in summer, and dried corn or leaves in fall—and you have effortless, ever-changing décor.
Beyond decorating, mason jars shine as thoughtful, handmade gifts. Layer dry ingredients for cookies, brownies, pancakes, or soups to create “gifts in a jar” that are both beautiful and useful. Hot cocoa mixes, homemade spice blends, bath salts, or herbal teas also make charming presents when finished with a fabric-covered lid and a handwritten label. In everyday life, mason jars can organize everything from pantry staples and baking supplies to buttons, nails, and craft items. Whether used for decorating, gifting, or organizing, mason jars offer a blend of creativity, thrift, and timeless charm that fits perfectly into a cozy, intentional home.
