DIY Kitchen Spray Without Vinegar for Natural Cleaning
If you’ve ever searched for homemade kitchen cleaners online, you’ve probably noticed that many recipes call for vinegar. While vinegar certainly has its place in natural cleaning, what many people fail to mention is that vinegar can damage certain surfaces—especially granite, marble, quartz, and other natural stone countertops. That’s exactly why I created this DIY Kitchen Spray Without Vinegar. It cleans beautifully, smells fresh, and gives me peace of mind knowing I’m not slowly damaging my countertops every time I clean my kitchen.

Why You Shouldn’t Use Vinegar on Granite Countertops
Vinegar is acidic, with a pH of around 2-3. Granite and other natural stone surfaces are sealed to protect them, but repeated exposure to acidic cleaners can gradually:
- Break down the protective sealant
- Cause dull spots or etching
- Leave countertops looking cloudy over time
- Shorten the lifespan of your expensive surfaces
Many people unknowingly use vinegar cleaners for years before realizing the damage that has occurred.
If you have granite, marble, quartzite, travertine, or other natural stone surfaces, a vinegar-free cleaner is a much safer option.

Why We Use Alcohol Instead
Instead of vinegar, this recipe uses 70% alcohol or vodka.
Alcohol helps by:
- Cutting through grease and grime
- Helping surfaces dry quickly and streak-free
- Providing sanitizing properties
- Preventing residue buildup
I’ll be honest—when you first spray it, there is a slight alcohol smell. Personally, I actually like that because it reminds me that it’s doing its job. The good news is that the scent disappears quickly, leaving behind the fresh smell of your essential oils.

Why I Use Grapefruit and Peppermint Essential Oils
You can customize this recipe with almost any essential oils you enjoy, but my personal favorite combination is:
- Grapefruit Essential Oil for its bright, clean citrus scent.
- Peppermint Essential Oil because ants absolutely hate peppermint.
Living in Oklahoma, we seem to battle ants every year, so I love that my cleaner doubles as a little extra pest deterrent around windows, doors, and countertops.
Why Glass Spray Bottles Are Better Than Plastic
Part of our homesteading journey has been finding simple ways to reduce toxins in our home, and switching to glass bottles is one of those changes. Between essential oils, alcohol, and growing concerns about microplastics in our environment, glass simply feels like the cleaner, longer-lasting choice.
That’s why I always recommend using glass spray bottles whenever possible.
This recipe is designed specifically for a 16-ounce glass spray bottle, which I think is the perfect size. Larger bottles become heavy and awkward to hold when you’re cleaning the kitchen.
That said, there is nothing wrong with making a larger batch and storing it in a mason jar or larger glass container so you can easily refill your 16-ounce bottle as needed.

Final Thoughts on DIY Kitchen Spray Without Vinegar
One of the biggest reasons I started making my own cleaning products was because I got tired of choosing between harsh chemicals and recipes that weren’t appropriate for my home surfaces.
This cleaner gives me the best of both worlds: effective cleaning without harsh chemicals or the risks that come with using acidic cleaners on stone countertops.
Plus, it smells amazing.
