Homemade Caramel Apple Pie Squares

As a homesteader who treasures cozy kitchen moments, I love how baking brings warmth and connection to our little backyard sanctuary. With autumn arriving and apple trees giving their last bounty, I wanted something sweet, comforting and easy to share. That’s how my version of Caramel Apple Pie Squares came to life—taking inspiration from a beloved bar‑style apple‑pie dessert and turning it into something I serve straight from my farmhouse kitchen to our gathering table.

Why I Love Caramel Apple Pie Squares

Traditional apple pie is always worth the effort, but when time is limited (and life on the homestead keeps us busy), these squares deliver that same heart‑warming flavor with a bit less fuss. Flaky crust, spiced apples and a gooey caramel layer finished off with a crumb topping all combine into one easy‑to‑cut square. It’s my go‑to when I want something special but still practical. Instructions for Caramel Apple Pie Squares

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F and line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  2. Make the crust: In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and flour until a soft dough forms. Press the mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  3. Prepare the apple filling: While the crust bakes, toss the sliced apples with flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl until evenly coated.
  4. Make the crumb topping: In a separate bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Assemble: Remove the crust from the oven and spread the apple mixture evenly over the warm crust. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden and slightly crisp.
  7. Allow the pan to cool for at least 30 minutes, then refrigerate until fully chilled, about 1½ to 2 hours.
  8. Using the parchment overhang, lift the slab out of the pan and cut the slab into 16 squares. Drizzle with homemade or store-bought caramel sauce and serve.

Homesteader’s Tips for Success

  • I like using one tart apple (like Granny Smith) and one sweet apple (like Honeycrisp) for balanced flavor and texture.
  • For easier slicing, pop the chilled squares into the freezer for 10 minutes before cutting—they’ll hold their shape beautifully.
  • These squares keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. They also freeze VERY WELL: wrap individually and store up to 3 months.
  • If your caramel sauce is too thick, warm it gently so it drizzles nicely over the apples.
