Homemade Deodorant Spray with Magnesium Flakes
Looking to switch to a more natural deodorant that actually works? This simple DIY homemade deodorant spray made with magnesium flakes might be your new favorite! My good friend Rachael and I decided to spend a Saturday making homemade alternatives to store-bought products, and this one has definitely earned a spot in my daily routine.

Why Make Homemade Deodorant?
Traditional deodorants and antiperspirants often contain a long list of questionable ingredients, many of which you may not want on your skin every day. Some of the most common include:
- Aluminum compounds – These block sweat glands but have raised health concerns over time.
- Parabens – Used as preservatives, they can mimic estrogen and disrupt hormones.
- Artificial fragrances – These are often made from undisclosed chemicals and can cause skin irritation.
- Triclosan – An antibacterial ingredient linked to hormone disruption.
- Phthalates – Common in synthetic fragrances, and known to interfere with hormonal systems.
Major corporations have bought up even some of the natural and organic brands we’ve come to trust. Unfortunately, many of them have changed the formulas, adding questionable ingredients or removing the very elements that once made the products effective. Now, reading the label isn’t enough—you also have to research who owns the brand.
That’s why I’ve started making more of my own products at home. When I DIY, I control what goes in and what stays out.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup magnesium flakes
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 7 drops of castor oil
That’s it! Three simple, safe ingredients.

Instructions
- Mix it up: Add all ingredients to a mason jar and shake well until the magnesium flakes are fully dissolved.
- Bottle it: Pour the mixture into a small glass spray bottle (around 2 ounces).
- Use: Shake before each use and spritz under each arm.

My Honest Experience
I’ve used this homemade spray deodorant for a week, and I can confidently say—it works! I still sweat a little during extreme temperatures (which is totally normal and healthy), but I haven’t experienced any odor at all.
The first time I applied it, I felt a slight tingling or stinging sensation under my arms. It only lasted about five seconds and wasn’t painful. If you have sensitive skin, test a small area first just to be safe.

Final Thoughts
This magnesium spray deodorant is easy to make, cost-effective, and gives you peace of mind knowing exactly what you’re putting on your skin. I love that it’s natural, and now I can’t imagine going back to conventional deodorants.
In a world where even so-called “clean” brands are being compromised, going DIY might just be the best way to protect your health. Plus, it feels good to make these things from scratch—especially when doing it with a friend like Rachael!
